चालू करना

The expression “चालू करना” with a complementary infinitive can mean “to begin/start”. It is very similar to शुरू करना, but it is more colloquial.

उसने कुछ न कुछ कागज़ पर लिखना चालू किया – “He began to write something or the other on a piece of paper”

उसने अभी अभी किताब पढ़नी चालू की थी कि किसी का फ़ोन आ गया – “She had just started reading the book when she got a phone call from someone”
