Oblique Infinitive + Imperfect Verb

The oblique infinitive followed by an imperfect verb form indicates a future action. It is very much like the English idiom “going to …”. It is an alternative for the future participle.

क्या वह वास्तव में शुल्क लेना शुरू करने जा रहा है – “Is he really going to start charging a fee?”

Alternatively, the future participle can be used:

क्या वह वास्तव में शुल्क लेना शुरू करने वाला है – “Is he really going to start charging a fee?”

Of course, this can be used with other imperfect verb forms, such as the past tense:

वह सैर करने जा रही थी कि उसका दोस्त आया – “She was going to go for a stroll when her friend came”
