Superlative Adjectives

Superlative adjectives indicate the greatest degree of an adjective.

Examples in English include “greatest”, “biggest”, “largest”, etc. Some English superlatives are formed with the adverb “most” – “most wonderful”, “most fun”, etc.

Hindi Superlative Adjectives

Hindi has few superlative adjectives. Instead, Hindi usually employs the superlative construction. The superlative construction is very similar to the comparative construction. The difference is that the object of comparison is the word सब.

Form

The general form of the superlative construction is:

subject +सबसे + positive adjective

Examples

ऋचा सबसे सुन्दर लड़की है – “Richa is the prettiest girl”

राम छात्रों में से सबसे होशियार है – “Ram is the smartest among the students”

With ज्यादा or कम

Just as with comparatives, superlatives may use ज्यादा to indicate explicitly the greatest degree.

Examples

ये कपडे सबसे ज्यादा महंगे हैं – “These clothes are the most expensive”
